FLORENTINA HOLZINGER (AT)
Tanz – Eine Sylphidische Träumerei in Stunts
Motocross-riding sylphs in a spectacular stunt ballet! TANZ is a brutal parody of the ruthless discipline of the romantic ballet tradition and its cultivation of the female body as a functional and sensational "special-effects" machine.
About the performance
Florentina Holzinger has enriched the international performance scene since 2011 with dizzying acrobatics, muscular female bodies and martial arts fighting scenes – and lots of references to pop and trash culture.
TANZ concludes Holzinger’s trilogy on the body as a spectacle and is a brutal parody of the ruthless discipline and cult of beauty within the romantic ballet tradition.
The framework of TANZ is a ballet class led by Beatrice Cordua – the first ballerina to dance Le Sacre du Printemps naked (Neumeier, 1972). The performers undergo rigorous training in the so-called “sylphic studies”; in a series of collective rituals, they learn to master their body and mind and acquire supernatural powers, including flying. Brutal parodies of exciting and sensational images, as we find them in ballet, comedy and pornography, emerge. The gaze regime is reflected in the character of a porn producer who documents the performance from within.
With an all-female cast between the ages 20-80, all with different backgrounds in dance, TANZ raises questions about the legacy of dance and the body as a spectacle. How does one reconcile with the beauty cult inherent in this tradition?
* The performance contains nudity, portrayals of self-harm and stroboscopic effects.
No admission under 18 years.
The performance is presented i collaboration with Det Frie Felts Festival and is supported by Augustinus Fonden and Statens Kunstfond.
About FLORENTINA HOLZINGER C/O SPIRIT E.V. – VEREIN ZUR ERHALTUNG DER PERFORMANCEKUNST
Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger studied choreography at the School for New Dance Development. Her artistic work revolves around identity, sexual and physical transgression. Drawing inspiration as much from Viennese Actionism, body art and bodybuilding as from classical ballet, cabaret, circus and martial arts practices, she deconstructs, performance after performance, the very definition of femininity.
