Cultural references and whimsical movement are at the core of Emese Cuhorka & Csaba Molnár’s duet MASTERWORK. Unfolding through a series of vignettes, the piece explores ways in which the body sheds cultural meanings and symbols projected upon it over the course of time. By using objects as costumes that block movement, the body reshapes its autonomy in a flurry of functional obstructions.

About the performance

Cultural references and whimsical movements are at the core of Emese Cuhorka & Csaba Molnár’s duet MASTERWORK. Unfolding through a series of vignettes (borrowing inspiration from the Bauhaus school of thought and the Triadic Ballet), the piece explores ways in which the body sheds cultural meanings and symbols projected upon it over the course of time.

By using objects as costumes that impede movement and give it a mechanical tinge, the body reshapes its autonomy in a flurry of functional obstructions.

Shifting postcards from the shared unconscious, petrified states of humanity, trance subdued into rhythm, dispassionate sequencing. Painkillers ground into dance, the elevated, dual loneliness of the incomparable. The continuous rush of restlessness, enslaving the body in its ceremonial course. Its functions slip between concrete and abstract meaning and are transformed into choreography.

Each and every body is a masterpiece in its own right, created by the self and the environment. By modifying the body, Cuhorka & Molnár manipulate the surroundings and thus create a freedom to redefine it.

About Emese Cuhorka and Csaba Molnár

EMESE CUHORKA (HU)
Emese is a dancer, teacher and choreographer. She has worked with Adrienn Hód since 2007 and has been a member of HODWORKS since 2009. Interested in experimenting with forms and performance formats, she also collaborated with László Fülop on movement research for more than ten years. Emese has danced in Hodwork’s pieces which have been selected by Aerowaves and she also co-choreographed and performed Your mother at my door by Timothy and the Things, another work selected by Aerowaves. Together with Csaba Molnár she develops artistic recontextualisation of subcultures.

CSABA MOLNÁR (HU)
Dancer and choreographer, Csaba Molnár strives for reconciling radical extremes. His main interest is to explore how different ways of expression, when juxtaposed, may transform the most private phenomena of human life into a universal and liberating theatrical experience. He is co-creator of eight pieces that received the annual Rudolf Lábán Award for the best Hungarian contemporary dance performance of the season, and he has performed and co-created six pieces which have been selected by Aerowaves.

MASTERWORK was selected for Aerowaves Twenty21.
