Sparkling colours, vibrant sculptures and soft electronic music invite babies and their grown-ups on a sensory journey through the coral reef. A touching performance about play, symbiosis and hope for nature - created especially for the very young.

Coral reefs are some of the most complex, fragile and colourful tropical ecosystems we have on this earth. Imagine a coral reef unfolded on stage – living sculptures, dancing costumes, soft soundscapes and colourful lights that change from day to night. In Hyper Coral, babies aged 0 to 24 months and their adults are invited into a sensory world of movement, light and play, where body and set design merge into a poetic universe.

Together you can explore a soft and safe coral universe filled with interactivity, curiosity and presence. It’s a performance that stimulates the senses and opens your eyes to both the beauty and vulnerability of nature.

Beneath the surface lie profound themes of symbiosis and community – and how we can look after what is fragile. The performance creates a space for reflection for adults and playful wonderment for the little ones.

Hyper Coral is created with sustainable materials and sound recordings from nature and is produced by the renowned dance company MYKA in collaboration with the performing arts duo Baum & Leahy.

Hyper Coral is a co-production between Bora Bora, Betty Nansen Teatret and Dansehallerne. As a children’s experience with depth, heart and hope, Hyper Coral is a natural part of the Dance Baby Dance Festival.

Reviews

★★★★★
”Hyper Coral is not just a performance – it is a space, a moment and a state of mind. It is an experience where children and adults meet in a shared sensory space and where art is allowed to be playful, sensuous and deeply human. A beautiful example of how performing arts for the very young can be both aesthetically refined and touchingly simple at the same time.”

About MYKA and My Grönholdt

MYKA is a Danish dance company founded and led by choreographer My Grönholdt. For over 12 years, she has created high-quality, interdisciplinary and sensory performances for children aged 0 to 6 years and their adults. With a strong professional background in children’s encounters with art and specialisation in body and senses, My has developed a unique artistic language where dance, installation, music and scenography merge into enchanting total experiences. MYKA’s works invite curiosity, presence and reflection – with themes such as climate, coexistence and hope. The company works both nationally and internationally and is committed to research, dissemination and development of art for the youngest. MYKA is recognised for its high artistic quality and is part of the Danish Arts Foundation’s career programme ‘The Young Artistic Elite’.

The artistic team
MYKA’s works are created in close collaboration with a strong team of artists. The music is composed by Erik Christoffersen, who creates new electronic music based on sound recordings from nature, customised for babies and their adults. Set design and costumes are developed by award-winning duo Baum & Leahy, known for transforming recycled materials into sensuous works of art. Lighting and video are designed by Balder Nørskov, whose work is inspired by the colours of nature and the luminescent effects of coral. Dancer Danjel Jeremiah has been associated with the company for several performances, and MYKA works actively with diverse casting and the inclusion of new performers to create diversity both on stage and among the audience. Together, the team creates vibrant, interactive universes that invite play, perception and reflection.

MYKA’s artistic methodology
MYKA creates innovative performances and installations for the very young and the adults who are part of their lives, based on current themes. The experiences unfold in sensory, magical and aesthetic universes inspired by nature, animals and natural phenomena. It is crucial for MYKA that both children and adults feel equally inspired and challenged during the performances.
At the core of MYKA’s work is the desire to create genuine, meaningful and close contact with audiences of all ages. Children mirror their parents’ experiences, both mentally and physically. This relationship makes artistic quality central to MYKA.
In accordance with this philosophy, MYKA works from a non-hierarchical approach to the artistic. Scenography is as important as choreography, so all elements of the work play an equal role. This approach means that MYKA’s work speaks to both the performing arts and the visual arts. The scenography is often designed as immersive, spatial installations, often directly inspired by visual art.
