Taranto Aleatorio
Two women share a moment - maybe in a park, maybe in a courtyard. They eat sunflower seeds, talk, share a silence. Out of everyday life song and dance suddenly bursts. Raw flamenco, humor and unpredictable beauty emerge in a playful encounter where tradition and innovation merge.
Artist talk after the performance on September 10th.
Two women sit eating sunflower seeds in a park, doorway or patio. They share an everyday space filled with conversation and the intimacy of silence. Suddenly they burst into song and dance, transforming the moment into a magical space where time and place dissolve.
In Taranto Aleatorio (“Random Taranto”), choreographer and dancer María del Marárez/La Chachi and singer Lola Dolores interpret the taranto tradition in a personal way. The raw taranto is a variant of flamenco from the mining region of Almería in Andalusia, where the dance is accompanied by simple singing without guitar.
The two artists master the power of the stage and create a warm and intense atmosphere with their immediate and fearless presence. The choreography shifts effortlessly between simple movements and powerful, swirling steps, where the rhythm of the heels mixes strength with melancholy. The space is filled with a song that could go on forever.
María del Mar Suárez and Lola Dolores offer their own take on the contemporary essence of flamenco. With great respect for the traditional tablao – the stage of flamenco – Suárez explores how dance and song can open up the unpredictable and create transformation through shared presence.
In flamenco’s intense dialog between voice and body, the artists shape time and space. The raw, unrefined singing surprises, and through the expression both movement and humor arise. Dance and song merge in constant change, integrating the new – as in life itself – and we dance on.
The performance is among the 20 prioritized new dance performances selected by the European Aerowaves network of dance theatres in 2024. Every year, this network – of which Bora Bora is a part – selects the most promising, talented choreographers in Europe.

“It is rare that we at Bora Bora have the opportunity to present a contemporary flamenco that shows how this powerful and ancient dance form continues to transform itself, so that even today it offers a poignant physical narrative about maintaining our community and resilience in spite. Get ready for Taranto Aleatorio!”
– Creative and executive director Lotte Kofod Ludvigsen

About María del Mar Suárez / La Chachi (ES)
María del Mar Suárez/La Chachi has earned her place in the tradition of breaking down and rethinking flamenco in the style of other outsiders like El Niño de Elche, Israel Galván and Rocío Molina. As an actor and dancer, she trained in both disciplines in her hometown of Malaga. After specializing in flamenco with “La Lupi” and training in physical theatre, contemporary dramaturgy and modern dance, she discovered her true passion: to combine all these arts at once.
Since 2008, María del Mar Suárez/La Chachi has been rethinking the traditional language of flamenco to suit her unique style, where hybridization is the norm. She created her first work in 2017, La gramática de los mamíferos (The Grammar of Mammals), which was honored with several nominations and awards. Her second work, La Espera, received support from Teatros del Canal in Madrid and was performed at Teatro Central in Seville. Her work Los inescalables Alpes, buscando a Currito (The Unclimbable Alps, Looking for Currito) was presented at the Festival de Otoño in Madrid and received the 2022 Godot Dance Award.
