The View

June 13th & 14th, 2023 - 19:30

“The View” (Udsigt) is a story based on personal experiences of Makka Kleist, who is one of Greenland's leading actors and storytellers.

Presented in collaboration with IETM Aarhus 2023

Venue: Teaterhuset Filuren

How do you fit twelve sled dogs into a 3-room apartment?

In the 1960’s and 70’s the Danish government decided to close down settlements in Greenland and relocate people to concrete buildings in towns, as part of their efforts to urbanise the native people of Greenland. Life changed dramatically; families were split up, their stories forgotten.

“The View” is a strong and touching performance about a woman and her husband being forced to leave their home. It is a story about love, grief and hope; about the new daily life, the sled dogs they had to put down, the joy of getting running water…

The performance gives insight into 50 years of recent Greenlandic history and the relationship between Denmark and Greenland, shedding light on something that has happened to many indigenous people around the world.

The monologue is written and performed by Makka Kleist, one of Greenland’s leading actresses and dramatists, and directed by Hanne Trap Friis. “The View” premiered in Nuuk, Greenland, in one of the buildings used in the urbanisation process.

Will be performed in English.
